Case Study: Wild BillDesign, Photo Illustration, The Onion
The Wild Bill is an example of classic Onion headline format that combines superficially similar elements in order to whimsically satirize public institutions. A believable Wild Bill would need an entirely original design that both honored the intricate work of currency engraving and clearly referenced UNO wild cards. Each real U.S. currency design is drawn and engraved using a mixture of modern and traditional methods, and specialized printing techniques protect against counterfeiting. Using the UNO oval shape and colors offered a clear and familiar allusion to the concept of the “wild card”.

Assuming my fictional “role” as the head designer of new U.S. currency, I turned to the recently redesigned $100 bill for inspiration. The Wild Bill similarly features a 3D security ribbon, a color-shifting denomination marker in the bottom right corner, and a saturated color palette that allows the classic UNO wild card elements to shine.
